Chapter 23 Outline
-Car sales increased during this time period. Cars were safer, more comfortable, ran better and cleaner. 2. Economy -The economy was doing very well, while having the unemployment low. -People were spending a lot of money because they were making a lot of money. There were plenty of jobs available which were flooding the economy with money. -People starting investing large amounts of money into stock markets because it was paying off. 3. Prohibition -The progressive ended during this period with the 18th Amendment , which banned the manufacturing and the sale of alcohol. This occured in January of 1920. -This was difficult because there were thousands of people still selling alcohol illegally and making a lot of money off from it. 4. Women’s Rights -Women gained the right to vote in 1920 -Women gained jobs due to the war -Women started protesting and speaking out on their rights 5. Entertainment -Jazz music was huge in the 1920’s -Baseball solidified itself as America’s pastime in this time period 6. Racism -The Ku Klux Klan became a big thing during this time period. -Racism was very bad, as there were lynchings happening a lot in the south. 7. The Crash -People were investing into the stocks. Then people started investing borrowed money and stocks into stocks. This eventually hit a breaking point and the countries economy plummeted. -People were using their houses as collateral with deals and stocks. This came back to bite everyone as the stocks crashed. 8. Rails -Thousands of teens were riding on cargo trains illegally as they were looking to get away from home for different reasons during the great depression. -Most teens were experiencing hardship in their homes due to their parents losing their jobs and money. -Kids would travel across the country to find new jobs and opportunities. Most kids ended up homeless. 9.WWII -This chapter ends with the start of WWII, which brought America out of their depression. |
